The children have worked very hard and made pleasing progress this half term. They have come a long way in their writing and with their mental maths skills. To assist in maintaining this momentum, it would be really helpful if you could work on a few things with your children over the coming weeks. Please see below.
This is not a request that you spend all of the holiday doing homework, simply some pointers in case you're keen to further support your child at home throughout their last term at Haynes. Some like to 'switch off' while other children like to keep busy!

Ivan is a young boy who lived with his mother, father and brother. One day, his brother was kidnapped so he went to go and find him. He trudged through snow and got attacked by wolves. Will this ever end? Will he save his brother? Will he even survive?
I like this novel because of its description and vocabulary. It was a joy to read and discuss this amazing book. I think you will like it too!
I would recommend this book to all ages as it was a joy to read, also it was fun and exciting.

Ice Palace is about a boy called Ivan who goes on a mission to find his brother. The setting of the story is icy, cold and dark. This book is brilliant because there are lots of things he comes across on his journey. I was always intrigued to read more of the story. I rate this book five stars because of the detailed writing.
One of the characters in this book is called Ivan, the main character, who has a mother and father, also a brother. Another character is Starjik, the child catcher. It's good he didn't capture me, don't you think!? My favourite character in Ice Palace is Ivan because he goes on lots of great adventures.

This book is all about a little boy called Ivan. Ivan lives with his little brother, his mother and his father, the blacksmith. He comes out at night when everyone has their shutters closed and after he had been, no one would hear a sound out of him except for the family member that Starjik had taken. But who will Starjik take next? What will happen next?
This book is set in a cold and snowy place where the trees are full of snow, summer is short and bright as a celandine and winter is as long and cold as an icicle.
My favourite character would have to be Ican because he had to save children.
I would recommend it to anyone aged above 5.
I would rate it 4/5 because I like the setting and the characters.

Have you ever read the book Ice Palace? Well if not, you're in for a treat.
It's about a boy who goes on a quest to find his little brother and goes through all sorts of dangerous problems. His little brother gets snatched by an evil person called Starjik. The end part is happy in my opinion, but I'm not going to tell you it!
This is a quest story to find a little brother. The person who tries to find his little brother is called Ivan. He is very brave and fearless.
I would recommend this book to people that like quest stories. This is a quest story and so is Finding Nemo. I think it's nearly the same because Nemo's on a quest to find his Dad. The setting isn't the same because Ice Palace is set in a snowy and very cold setting but Nemo is water themed.
In my opinion, this book is 8/10. Class wise, I would recommend it to Years 3 and 4. You would find it around in libraries and shops like Waterstones.
Wow, Year 4! We are so impressed with you all and your attitude, behaviour and progress in your swimming lessons this half term.
It was a joy to bring the children to Flitwick Leisure Centre for swimming lessons each week. We have watched them grow in confidence in the water and build their ability to swim longer distances in a variety of strokes.
The children who are beginning to learn how to swim amazed me with the development in their confidence and attitudes to the water. They demonstrated the Values of courage and determination as they pushed themselves to try new things each week. It was wonderful to watch!
For the accomplished swimmers, it was a pleasure to see you refine your techniques and enjoy swimming alongside your classmates. Well done.
Today, it was a joy to see all of the children having lots of fun with the floats at the end of the session to celebrate their achievements over the series of lessons.
We also want to congratulate the children on their exemplary behaviour during the lessons. We were delighted to receive a phone call at school, from a member of the public, to say how impressed they were with the children's behaviour in the leisure centre. The children were impressively speedy, sensible and a pleasure to bring each week.

We're back to school with a bang this half term and it's busier than ever! Our topic for Summer Term is Fire and Ice and we're already getting into it in English, History, Geography, Science and Art!
Year 4 were interest to learn about Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to the Antarctic. They enjoyed discovering his journey through the story 'Ice Trap' and investigating the truth behind the adventure in History using a range of sources. The children worked together in art to think about the night skies that they might find in the polar regions and created some landscapes with a variety of pencils, ink and watercolours. The results were beautiful!
Last week, we enjoyed taking part in the project 'Marvellous Maps' with a representative of the Greensand Trust. This Geography-focused day helped us to explore a range of maps, plot key landmarks of Haynes onto sketch maps and follow a route around the village. The children enjoyed our walk, completing a quiz about the village, a field sketch and a collage to explore the colour palette in Plummers Copse. In the afternoon, the children worked together to mark a large map of Haynes, putting their houses into position as well as other key buildings from around Haynes. A fabulous day was had by all!
Swimming lessons have commenced and we are loving these. The children are making rapid progress in their swimming groups and are trying out a range of strokes as well as diving down to retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool. The children's behaviour and organisation each week has been exemplary. Well done Year 4.

It's been a busy first week back, starting our new topic 'Chocolate'. We've got stuck into our class book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', which we are all thoroughly enjoying. This week, we have been getting to know the characters in detail and expanding our vocabulary to describe them. Some super words came out: 'gluttonous', 'vile' and 'good natured' to name a few!
In PE, we have continued this theme by creating an Oompa Loompa dance. Year 4 trialed some of the movement patterns from the Oompa Loompa dance in the newer film and explored how they could make their own. The children thought carefully about creating simple motifs, putting them together to create a dance and then using movements in unison and in canon to add interest to our dance. In our next PE lesson, we watched videos of our dances and evaluated our performances, identifying areas for improvement and then acting upon these. Keep an eye out for videos to come!
In Geography, we researched the world's greatest producers of cacao and have plotted them on a map, looking for patterns in the position of the countries that produce the most cacao and wondering what conditions the trees need to grow. In History, we have begun learning about the Ancient Mayan civilization, where and when they were around and some of their achievements.
It's been a pleasure to begin Sing Out Play Out singing sessions this term and today we had our second session of learning the songs in preparation for our concert at Bedford Corn Exchange in Summer term. We think you might know some of the songs too. In Maths, we have been thinking about statistics, presenting data in bar charts, line graphs and pictograms. Following that, we have been learning how to interpret the data shown in climate graphs and asking sum, comparison and difference questions.
Carolling in Haynes
I was ever so proud to bring the whole of Year 4 out into Haynes to sing Christmas Carols for the villagers. The children sang beautifully and we had some lovely comments from the local residents. You spread our value of joy amongst the community and should feel very proud.
What fun we had practising and performing the wonderful pantomime ‘Cinderella and Rockerfella’! A huge well done to our fantastic children who were a very responsible and joyful cast, making the production a pleasure to produce! With so many lines to learn, songs to sing and props to remember, this was no easy task, so I am extremely proud of what you achieved. Well done Year 4!
This term we had a specialist music teacher come into school each week to teach the class how to play the pitched instrument: the recorder. The children learned about musical staff and notation and how to read these. They learned how to use their fingers to play the different notes and ways of making notes different lengths to produce a range of rhythms; they also explored how to play at different volumes. The children played pieces requiring them to repeat patterns; read the music; and also to compose some of their own musical pieces. They often worked in small groups to develop their performances. A great term’s work showing fantastic progress in Music!
Year 4's MyMaths homework will be set each Friday to be completed by the following Friday.
This gives you a week to access the task, practise as necessary and as frequently as you would like, and then complete the questions for the homework section. We will be able to see when you have completed the task and how well you have got on which will help us to know if you might need a little bit more help. You can complete the questions more than once if you would like to try to improve your score. If you have any questions - please ask.
Having finished a successful unit of Tag Rugby with some competitions, we have now moved onto multi-skills to help to improve our range of physical skills which can be applied in various games. So far, we have developed our spatial awareness and ball skills. Next week, we will be looking at building our speed, agility and co-ordination - important skills across a range of sports.
Marcy and the Riddle of Sphinx
Year 4 have been enjoying the adventure story 'Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx' by Joe Todd-Stanton this week. We have read the story, developed an understanding of the characters and 'boxed-up' the story, thinking about the structure of an adventure story. Next week, we will learn about different grammatical skills that we might need to include when writing our own adventure stories based in Ancient Egypt.
Multiplication and Division
We are currently focusing on learning times tables in Year 4 and applying these in different ways within the multiplication and division lessons. We have learned about factor pairs and how to use them in mental calculations. We have also learned how to multiply three numbers together. It's really important that everyone knows their times tables up to 12x12 by the end of Year 4, so keep on practising at home. I hope you enjoy using our new mathematics programme 'MyMaths' to help you learn them. There will be new tasks set each week for you to complete.

Key Stage 2 had a wonderful time learning about and celebrating Diwali. We mixed up as a Key Stage and carried out different activities. We started by learning a dance as a Key Stage and enjoyed performing it to the rest of the school. Some of us learned about the story of Rama and Sita and created a story board to tell the story. The rest of us learned about the cultural experiences when celebrating Diwali and created posters to explain how people celebrate the festival. Later in the day, we made lanterns to decorate the hall for our assembly to help us to celebrate the festival of light. We enjoyed getting together as a whole school to share our learning and sing songs about Diwali. What a fun day!
The children are loving our Ancient Egypt topic and have impressed me with their attitude to learning with lots of children bringing in extra work that they have completed at home. I loved seeing (and tasting!) the children's take home tasks and their creations were very impressive. Puffin Class were fascinated by the mummification process and finding out about the pharaohs. They loved researching about pyramids and finding out how they were built and what was inside them. The children loved finding out about Egyptian homes and fashion.
This week, ten Year 4 children went to Samuel Whitbread together with other children their age from nearby schools. All the children received training on becoming 'Sports Ambassadors'. This role requires the children to lead physical activities throughout the year and to assist with various sporting events. The children will also be expected to uphold and model sporting values, such as teamwork and passion.
The children loved the training session and had a brilliant time learning some new activities which they are looking forward to leading for other children in the school. If you are in the school building, keep an eye out for the display board which shows you who the children are and some photos of their training session.

Royal Wedding Tea Party
Many thanks to those of you who baked and decorated cakes for our Royal Wedding Tea Party event held on Friday. What talented bakers we have! It was a lovely, sunny afternoon for celebrations and the children enjoyed sharing them with their families.

What a joy it has been this term to take Year 4 to their swimming lessons at Flitwick Leisure Centre. Their progress over the course of sessions is notable - a lot less splashing, improving techniques and many children now swimming full lengths of the pool without stopping.
Whilst at the leisure centre, many members of the public have commented on the commendable behaviour of our children with one person phoning the school simply to say how well-behaved and polite our children have been each week. It is a pleasure to see Haynes values in action in our community. We know our children are wonderful but it is especially lovely when it is noticed by others. I am a very proud teacher!
West Runton Kingswood - Our Residential
A wonderful time was had by all on our residential this week. The children demonstrated courage in some very challenging activities such as abseiling and 'Jacob's Ladder' and fantastic cooperation in team work activities such as 'nightline' and 'low ropes'. We spent a morning at the beach in wonderful weather and enjoying a campfire and 'Mini Olympics' in the evenings. In History, we have been learning about the Indus Valley civilisation. This week we learned all about the fashion and jewellery of the time (around 5000 years ago). We discovered that they loved jewellery and made it from pottery and stones as well as gold and silver. We looked at the natural patterns that occur in stones and designed our own necklaces. This enthusiastic member of Puffin Class then made her very own Indus Valley necklace at home!

Recently, we have been learning about the human digestive system. This week we posed the question, 'What happens to food in our digestive system?' We carried out an experiment to see just what happens!
We crunched up food, put it into the stomach (a sandwich bag), added water for saliva and orange juice in the place of stomach acid then crushed it all up using the pump action that our stomachs use. We then squeezed the food through the intestine (a leg from a pair of tights) and saw the good products move into the 'body' (a aluminium tray) to be used and the waste products solidify before being passed out of the body. It was messy but great fun, as you can see in the photos. The experiment was a great way to see just what happens to food in our digestive system.
Queen's Park Faith Tour - 13th March 2018
Today we visited Queen's Park in Bedford, a community rich in culture and religion, where Christians, Muslims and Sikhs live together in harmony alongside people of other faiths and none. In this area, the three faith groups have places of worship within 300 metres of each other. Together, they provide the opportunity to being RE to life through first hand experience, to enhance the spiritual and cultural development of pupils and to offer experience of community cohesion in a diverse neighbourhood. The children visited the three places of worship and spoke to practising members of each faith, asking and answering questions.
We started the day in the Gurdwara, the Sikh place of worship, where we learn about the main guiding principles of the faith. We visited their prayer room, saw their holy scriptures (the Guru Granth Sahib) and listened to some of the music which could be part of worship. Afterwards, we went to the Mosque, where Muslims worship. The Imam there explained to us the five pillars of Islam and helped us to understand how Islam is practised within the community and around the world. We learned how Muslims prepare themselves for prayer by washing and about the important journey they make (Hajj) to Mecca. Finally, we went to the Church. We identified important objects to the Christian faith and the leader explained their significance for Christians. We learned about the different robes that vicars or priests wear, and other important elements of Christian worship such as candles representing Jesus as the light of the world.
The trip was very informative and interesting; the children impressed me with their questions and reflections on what they had learned. Their behaviour was respectful and excellent throughout. Well done Year 4.

This week we have enjoyed some traditional Indian stories from the collection 'Seasons of Splendour' by Madhur Jaffrey, which has helped us to understand more about Indian culture and the Hindu religion. In maths, we have explored symmetry in 2D shapes and completed symmetric figures. In computing, we learned about how search engines work and how they rank their content; there's a very complicated process that all happens within half a second. We were amazed! A huge well done to those children who participated in the swimming gala at Flitwick Leisure Centre. There were some challenging events and you did us proud.
Thank you to all those parents that came to join in our end of half term celebration this afternoon. We hope you enjoyed our dragon dance and looking at our books. The children loved having you in and it was a pleasure to watch you sharing their learning. It's been a busy half term with lots happening and I am really proud of how hard the children have worked and the progress that they have made. From wonderful stories written to beautiful art to be proud of, the children have a lot to celebrate over half term and have definitely earned their break!
Children, remember it's Chinese New Year on Friday 16th February so perhaps you could rustle up a delicious Chinese-inspired meal together and you could teach your family everything you've learned about China this half term!

This week we finalised casting for our pantomime 'Aladdin' and your children will have brought home scripts. It was a real challenge selecting who would play each character as we have such a broad selection of talented children in KS2.
Please support your children at home in learning their words as some of them have rather a lot to remember and pantomime season will be upon us very soon! Over the next few weeks, we will be rehearsing the play and its songs and the sooner the children know their lines the better the performance will be.
We're all feeling very excited about this fantastic play and can't wait to get stuck in and make this year's performance the best Haynes panto yet!
Year 4 News
Since half term, Year 4 have a new focus within our 'Wonderful World' topic. We are loving finding out about the rainforests of the world, their importance to our planet and their impressive ecosystems.
In English, we have researched and planned fact files with a focus and we are going to present the information to one another. In computing, we carefully selected our search terms and carried out research about rainforests, critiquing and ranking the search results that we found. In Geography, we have learned about the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn - where the tropical rainforests are - and have developed understanding of what this means for the climate within the rainforest. We have started to learn about Ancient Mayan civilisation in History, and have discovered that these Ancient people lived amongst the rainforests in Central America; this week we found out about their gods and religions and made comparisons with religions that are practiced in the world today.
Henri Rousseau has been our inspiration in art, as many of his masterpieces were often set in jungles and rainforests. We have learned facts about this great artist and have zoomed in closer on his paintings, trying to recreate parts of the images in our sketchbooks using crayons.
In DT, we have tasted a range of fruit and smoothies and have planned our own based on our research. We've started to rehearse for our final performance in Music, and are becoming more skillful on the ukelele each week. We are continuing to develop our skill set in Tag Rugby and have enjoyed our sessions with Miss Marshall, learning lots from her expertise!
As you can tell, we have been very busy since returning from half term and, as ever, the children continue to impress me with their positive attitudes. Well done Puffins!
In Science this half term, Year 4 have been learning about plants. We've thought about the life cycle of flowering plants, how water moves within plants and the requirements of plants for growth. We have learned a lot of scientific vocabulary relating to the topic and this week we focused on the names of different parts of the flower including style, stigma and ovary. We've set up investigations and made careful observations too. Have a look at us working hard in Science below.
This week we have been working hard in Maths to improve our knowledge of times tables. We've played lots of games, learned rhymes and made up our own rhymes too! We've completed speed challenges and tried to beat our personal bests.

The Iron Man
Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed reading and exploring the text 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes. We've learned about the key characters, written a biography for Hogarth and are about to write newspaper articles about some of the surprising events that happen within the story. Have you read the Iron Man? We think you might enjoy it!
In Art, we are creating portraits of The Iron Man using chalk pastels. We will be exploring light and shade and how to create a three-dimensional effect using shading and blending. Keep checking back for photos of the finished product!
