English

English should be taught for 45-60 mins a day. This may include spellings, handwriting practise and a piece of writing.

Children should read to an adult for 10 mins a day. They should be encouraged to answer question, make inferences and predictions and to link what they are reading to their own experiences.

 

Handwriting, Grammar and Punctuation

Year 1 children should be ensuring that they are forming their lower-case and capital letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place. Their sentences should include finger spaces, capital letters and either a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. They should be using capital letters for names of people, places, the days of the week and the personal pronoun 'I' and they should be joining words and clauses using 'and'.

 

Spellings

Children should be able to spell words that are phonetically decodable, this means that they are spelt using the Phase 3 or Phase 5 graphemes. They should be able to spell the Year 1 common exception words correctly and the days of the week. All other words should have a phonetically plausible attempt (spelt using the phonic sounds that they know)  at spelling e.g. fierce might be spelt 'f-ee-ur-s' or 'slow' might be spelt 's-l-oe'.

 

Writing - Composition and Transcription

Year 1 children should be talking about what they are going to write about before they start their sentences. They should be encouraged to compose sentences orally before writing them to ensure they make sense. Once your child has produced a piece of writing, please encourage them to re-read what they have written, either to you or independently and allow them to make changes to improve their writing. They should then be able to read their writing aloud to you.

Examples of writing purposes for Year 1 might be: 

A letter, a story, a fact-file, a simple newspaper report, a set of instructions etc. 

Please make sure that any writing activities are fun, engaging and have a purpose... for example, you may bake some cookies together and then ask your child to write down the ingredients and equipment you used, followed by a set of simple instructions.
